The Oranjestad tram rails

Discover Oranjestad

Only a 9 minute drive from Sabana Blanco Suites, Aruba’s capital city, Oranjestad, is a vibrant mix of colorful colonial architecture, modern shopping, and rich history.

Take a free ride on the tram to explore the downtown area:  the Oranjestad tram drives on weekdays between 10am and 2pm and starts at the cruise terminal. This hop-on and hop-off tram has 6 stops, and drives past historical buildings, museums, and the Renaissance Mall.

Museums you can visit include the National Archaeological Museum, which offers different exhibitions, the Fort Zoutman Historical Museum, which in itself is the oldest building in Oranjestad, built in 1796, and the L'America Gallery, showcasing different art from South America.

Or browse high-end shops at the Renaissance Mall, such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Chopard, David Yurman, Rolex and Cartier.

Must see sights:

  • The historic buildings in Oranjestad: Beautifully preserved colonial architecture influenced by Dutch and Spanish styles. Strolling through Oranjestad, you’ll find pastel-colored buildings, traditional cunucu houses, and modern shops blended into the historical fabric of the town.

  • California Lighthouse: Located on Aruba’s northwestern tip, the California Lighthouse offers panoramic views of the island's rugged coastline, the Caribbean Sea, and the high-rise hotel area. Built in 1916 and named after the SS California shipwreck, the lighthouse stands as a symbol of Aruba’s maritime history. The surrounding area is perfect for sunset viewing, and the nearby Faro Blanco Restaurant offers an elegant dining experience with breathtaking scenery.

  • Natural Bridge: Aruba’s dramatic coastline is home to several natural limestone bridges formed by the relentless waves of the Caribbean. The most famous Natural Bridge collapsed in 2005, but the nearby Baby Bridge remains a stunning formation worth visiting. The area features scenic ocean views, rugged cliffs, and the nearby Andicuri Beach, a favorite for adventurous travelers.

  • Wild donkeys: Aruba’s wild donkeys are a reminder of the island’s past when they were the primary mode of transport. Although their numbers declined over the years, the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary now protects and cares for them. Visitors can interact with the donkeys, feed them, and learn about their history on the island. The sanctuary is a great stop for animal lovers and families.

  • San Nicolaas: Known as Aruba’s cultural heart, is famous for its vibrant street art, local artisans, and laid-back charm. Once a bustling refinery town, it has transformed into a hub for creativity, hosting the annual Aruba Art Fair. Visitors can explore murals by international artists, visit the Museum of Industry, and enjoy Caribbean cuisine at local eateries like O’Niel Caribbean Kitchen. The town is also close to Baby Beach, a calm and shallow lagoon perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Tips for an Amazing Stay

  • Rent a car: Aruba’s best spots aren’t always on public transport routes.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen: Protect the island’s marine life while enjoying the sun.
  • Try local snacks: Pastechi (stuffed pastries) and pan bati (Aruban cornbread) are must-tries.
  • Respect nature: The island’s beaches and wildlife are fragile—help keep them pristine!
